So, how does Colorado rank as a state? Well, that’s a pretty tough, open-ended question. Sure, we tend to rank highly on lists that look at the top states for skiing, legal marijuana sales, and sunlight, but we rarely show up on lists of top culinary destinations, beach resorts or best-dressed cities. So, to get an idea of where we shine, we dug into the Built in Colorado archives to see how we’ve been ranked so far this year. Check it out:

Startup Rankings: Denver was ranked the 5th best city in the United States for startup activity. The best part was that we bumped San Francisco from the spot.

Startup Density: Boulder has the highest density of startups in the country, and Ft. Collins has the second highest density. For a very un-dense state, our density superlatives didn’t stop there. Denver has the 6th highest density and Colorado Springs the 9th.

Best Cities For Starting a Business: Boulder was named the best city in the United States to start a business. Fort Collins was the 12th best city, Denver the 24th, Greeley the 99th, and Colorado Springs the 107th.

Best Cities for Doing Business: Denver was named the 10th best city in the U.S. for actually doing business. So, I guess start your company in Boulder and move to Denver a couple of years later. Colorado Springs was ranked 73rd out of 101 in the same list.

Best States for Business: Given how well Colorado cities performed, it’ll come as no surprise that the state as a whole was ranked the 4th best for business.

Best States for Workers: It’s not just that the state is good for businesses either, it’s also good for workers. Colorado was ranked the 7th best state for making a living. While Texas took the top spot in that list, it doesn’t seem to have stopped the flow of Texans relocating here.

Best Job Market for Women: Denver was ranked the 8th best job market for women in the United States. Oklahoma City took the top spot in that study, but I can’t help but assume that Colorado women aren’t going to be moving there in droves anytime soon.

Importance to the World Economic System: Ok, so we’re not New York or Beijing, but Denver was ranked as a Beta city. That puts us in the same category as cities like Detroit, Nairobi, Seattle, Hanoi and Antwerp.

Best Cities For Young Professionals: Denver has a ton of young and educated people calling it home. The city has the 4th highest density of young, educated people in the country. That adds up to the 8th largest overall population of young professionals in the country -— well ahead of much larger cities like Los Angeles, Houston and Atlanta.

Best Workplaces for Millennials: Since we have all these young, educated go-getters, it’s good that 3 Colorado companies were named among the best workplaces in the United States for Millennials: Sphero, New Belgium Brewing and Zen Planner.
