Are you interested in joining the startup community, but worried you don’t have enough tech knowledge or coding skills to make the cut? While it always helps to know some basic tech concepts, quite a few job functions don’t require any code at all.
Of course, working for a startup means you’ll probably wear a number of hats, so it wouldn’t hurt to learn a little HTML or CSS — or even something more advanced — along the way. But if you’re looking to break into the ‘biz, we’ve found five areas you could work in, even if you don’t have (m)any coding skills.
Sales
Open jobs: More than 80 across the Front Range (but primarily in Denver)
Potential job titles: Business Development Associate, Sales Manager, Admissions Counselor
Along with developers, sales pros are in high demand in Colorado tech. As the person closing deals and bringing in the money, you’ll need to know your company’s pitch like the back of your hand — and you’ll need some excellent people skills.
Marketing
Open jobs: More than 50 in Denver and Boulder
Potential job titles: Content Specialist, Event Director, Market Research Strategist
As a marketer, you’ll be responsible for making sure people know about your company — and ensuring they have a favorable image of the company, too. You’ll have to be creative with your strategies and tactics, and the ability to analyze your results is a must.
Customer Support
Open jobs: 35 in Denver and Boulder
Potential job titles: Customer Advocate, Customer Service Representative, Customer Success Manager
In customer support, you’ll play a key role in the customer-company relationship — you’re the first person a customer or client will turn to if they’re having trouble. You’ll need to know how to guide them to a successful resolution without losing your cool.
Design
Open jobs: More than 20 in Denver and Boulder
Potential job titles: Lead Experience Architect, UX Designer, Senior Graphic Designer
Whether UX, UI or graphic design, what you do is about way more than just making things look good — they have to be easy to use, and bad design can be one of the most frustrating experiences ever. You’ll have to know what makes bad design bad, and what makes good design good. And you’ll have to be able to bring good design principles to life, working with developers to marry code and design.
Accounting / Finance
Open jobs: More than 20 in Denver and Boulder
Potential job titles: Accounts Payable Specialist, Staff Accountant, Strategic Finance Analyst
From crunching numbers to breaking down budgets, Excel formulas may come in handy more than lines of code. As the company’s money manager, you’ll need to have a mastery of QuickBooks, an ambitious spirit and the ability to pay attention to details.
