Role Overview

Interns at Boom will have the opportunity to join an exciting aircraft startup focused on world-changing technology. Our interns work on real stuff - like coordinating with the propulsion, marketing, and policy teams to deliver the best possible versions of Overture and Symphony.

Our interns should be compelled to build innovative solutions, create new designs and collaborate with others. We are looking for passionate and talented students with a background in data science, engineering, mathematics or computer science - one year from graduation (Bachelor or Masters degree). The ideal candidate will be excited about problem solving and be passionate about the future of supersonic aircraft design.

Responsibilities

As a Data Science Intern at Boom, you will be working with the team developing tools and methods that power data acquisition for Boom's engine development program. You’ll dive into real-time telemetry and data visualization, data wrangling and post-test data analysis and even get hands-on hardware experience. This is a unique opportunity to blend data science with real-world aerospace engineering—building systems that bring supersonic flight closer to reality.

You will contribute to the development of software tools, data system architecture, and hardware integration efforts that are central to Boom’s engine development program. Your work will directly support critical test operations—including the opportunity to gain hands-on experience at test sites. Beyond helping Boom’s work to achieve a successful test fire, you'll gain invaluable, real-world experience as a core member of the test team.

The Ideal Candidate

  • You see complex systems as puzzles waiting to be solved and thrive in environments where innovation meets precision.
  • One year away from graduation in a bachelor or master degree program in data science, engineering, mathematics, computer science, or similar program.
  • Software development skills including experience in the following programming languages: Go, JavaScript, Python, MATLAB, C++ or Rust.
  • Strong background in numerical computing or statistics.
  • Prior internship or hands-on project experience in aerospace, defense, or related high-tech industries.

What Sets You Apart

  • Coursework or experience working with empirical experimental data, especially with quantitative or statistical analysis as well as data visualization. Experience applying data science techniques to these domains—such as modeling, simulation, or test data analysis—is highly valuable.
  • Coursework or experience in one or more of the following: aircraft design, aircraft structures, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, vehicle dynamics or aerodynamic performance analysis, electrical circuit design and simulation, wind tunnel experience (data collection, model Building etc.)
  • Exposure to aircraft systems, controls, or avionics with an emphasis on data-driven analysis, modeling, or tool development.
  • Experience working with or managing data and system requirements in the context of aircraft development or production programs.
  • Experience in a leadership role on at least one project, from concept to completion.
  • Flying experience
