Job Description
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is seeking an experienced Senior Compensation Analyst. This position will support the design and administration of NREL’s compensation programs and will serve as a compensation partner for Talent Acquisition, HR Business Partners, managers and leaders. This role will also serve as an advisor to the Compensation Manager on Compensation policies, procedures, and compensation program improvements.
Responsibilities may include some or all of the below:
Job Analysis, documentation, and evaluation
- Conduct interviews and focus groups with employees and managers to document duties, responsibilities, knowledge, and skills required for positions.
- Update and maintain job description and job documentation library.
- Evaluate new and existing jobs to determine market benchmarks, internal alignment, and appropriate salary grade placement.
Compensation programs including merit, promotions, adjustments, and bonuses.
Oversee and/or assist the Compensation Team with the following:
- Draft policy documents and provide recommendations on improvements to the design and administration of annual Compensation processes.
- Conduct planning for annual Compensation processes.
- Calculate budgets.
- Define specifications and test processes in HRMS.
- Draft/review communications to HR Business Partners, managers, and leaders.
- Explain Compensation programs to HR Business Partners, Managers, and employees.
- Partner with HR Business Partners to successfully deliver programs.
Market data, benchmarking, and analysis
- Participate in salary surveys.
- Analyze survey data to determine market trends impacting NREL jobs
- Present market-based pay recommendations to Compensation Manager, HR Business Partners, and HR Leadership.
Compensation recommendations
- Partner with Talent Acquisition to determine appropriate offers for new and internal hires.
- Partner with HR Business Partners, managers, and directors, as needed to analyze the impact of various compensation options and provide recommendations for job profile selection, salary changes, and employee compensation planning.
- Conduct job and salary reviews for groups of jobs and provide recommendations.
Communications
- Provide recommendations on strategic Compensation communication and training initiatives.
- Develop and deliver communications and training materials on a variety of compensation topics.
- Draft desktop procedure and standard operation procedure documents
- Draft and review policy and procedure documents for consistency and accuracy.
- Provide Compensation subject matter expertise for the lab and mentoring for Compensation analysts.
- Other duties as assigned.

Basic QualificationsRelevant Bachelor's Degree and 9 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree and 7 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant PhD and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant JD and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Applies extensive technical expertise, and has full knowledge of other related disciplines. Contributes to the development of new concepts, techniques and standards. Considered internal subject matter expert. Extensive knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices related to specific field. Excellent leadership, project management and problem solving skills. Ability to use various computer software programs.

Additional Required Qualifications
Seven or more years of direct compensation analyst experience performing all or most of the job duties described in this requisition.
Demonstrated ability to:
- Identify problems, think independently about alternative data-based solutions, and present clear, succinct recommendations to decision-makers.
- Maintain confidentiality concerning employee information.
- Work collaboratively as a member of an integrated and supportive team.
- Effectively manage multiple priorities and see projects through to completion.
- Provide thought leadership on Compensation programs and initiatives.
Demonstrated skills and knowledge in the following areas:
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
- Proficiency supporting Compensation activities in HRMS, preferably Workday. Proficiency using a cloud-based market-pricing tool, preferably MarketPay.
- Design and administration of Compensation processes and programs.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience leading annual merit and bonus processes.
Experience using/managing compensation processes in Workday.
Experience conducting market analysis using MarketPay.
Certified Compensation Professional certification.
Experience working in a Department of Energy national laboratory or government contractor organization.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)Job Profile: Professional IV / Annual Salary Range: $97,800 - $176,000
NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees.
