The Vice President, Engineering, Science and Analysis (ESA) will lead the ESA team in its mission: organize, train and equip BAE Systems, Inc. Space and Mission Systems (SMS) sector's engineers, scientists and analysts to perform successfully on SMS's programs, pursuits and Internal Research and Development (IRAD) projects. The VP, ESA works with the VP/GMs of the Strategic Business Units (SBUs) to ensure ESA has the right technical capabilities and technical capacity for them to bid, win and execute their programs. Furthermore, the position works in concert with the other Strategic Capability Units (SCUs) to ensure our people thrive and our programs succeed. This position requires excellent skills in people leadership, organizational leadership and the vision/drive/judgment necessary to help the business flourish.
The Engineering, Science and Analysis (ESA) Strategic Capabilities Unit comprises the technical talent and organizational leadership that enables the successful delivery of high-impact discriminating technologies for our customers' missions. What You'll Do:
- Serve as a key member of the SMS Executive Leadership Team (ELT); ability to demonstrate a First Team mindset - prioritizing building trusting relationships and supporting fellow leaders as top priorities.
- Organize - lead the ESA Leadership Team (ESALT) in ensuring ESA has the right people with the right skills at the right time on the right programs/pursuits/IRADs. Provide vision, guidance, assistance as needed.
- Train - lead the ESALT in ensuring the ESA team continues to grow and thrive, in their technical skills, people skills and leadership skills - both for needs today and for future needs. Provide vision, guidance, assistance as needed.
- Equip - lead the ESALT in ensuring the ESA team has the right tools, products, capabilities to successfully execute on the SBUs' programs, pursuits and IRADs - both for needs today and for future needs. Provide vision, guidance, assistance as needed.
- Create an organizational culture that recruits, develops, and retains top technical talent and leaders of technical teams.
- With the ESALT, provide strategic direction for all engineering, science and analysis activities within SMS.
- Lead a team of 2000+ people - inspire and connect with individuals, teams and the organization in an authentic manner.
- With technical experts throughout ESA, foresee industry trends and technological advancements, identify technologies that are threats and/or opportunities. Develop strategies to mitigate the technological threats and ensure SMS is positioned to take full advantage of the technology opportunities.
- Manage engineering budgets and align them with company goals.
- Employ solid communication skills to convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and influence decision-making.
- Assist in the creation and execution of the SMS sector strategy and the SBU/SCU strategies.
- Collaborate with the BAE Systems, Inc. Engineering Council to elevate the capabilities of engineering across all BAE System Inc. sectors.
- Digital engineering: Have awareness of the trends in digital engineering and knowledge sufficient enough to provide vision, guidance and assistance as needed to the ESA digital engineering team.
- Operate with the highest ethical standards and promote ethical conduct across the organization.
- Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
- Perform other duties as necessary.
On-Site Work Environment: This position requires regular in-person engagement by working four days each normally scheduled week in the primary work location. Travel and local commute between company campuses and other possible non-company locations may be required.
Working Conditions:
- Work is performed in an office environment, laboratory, cleanroom, or production floor.
Required Education, Experience, & Skills
- BS in Engineering or related applied science field plus 15 years or more related experience.
- Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master's Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
- Significant people leadership skills. While ESA is an organization that accomplishes technical work, ESA is a people organization, and the leader needs excellent skills in leading people.
- Significant organizational leadership skills. The work of ESA is at the heart of what SMS does for customers. As such, it touches and is part of every SBU and SCU in SMS. Therefore, the leader needs to think and act in a manner that leads to the success of the SBUs and other SCUs.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, leadership ability, initiative and creativity, and a high degree of judgment while working within an environment that places a premium on collaboration and teamwork; demonstrated coalition building skills.
- The ability to work and be an integral part of an action-oriented, decision-making working environment.
- Experience in managing in matrix environment and developing technical staff, leaders and administrative professionals effectively, as well as appropriately advising/ influencing senior-level corporate executives.
A security clearance or access with Polygraph is not required to be eligible for this position. However, the applicant must be willing and eligible for submission, depending on program requirements, after an offer is accepted and must be able to maintain the applicable clearance/access.
Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills
- Graduate degree preferred.
- A current, active TS/SCI clearance is preferred.
